Italo-Ethiopian Google her. She is a striking singer, songwriter, and performance artist of mixed descent: born of an Italian father and an Ethiopian mother. Which is interesting, since the Italians occupied her country from 1936 to 1941, as part of Mussolini's fascist imperialism. Born in 1965, Ghermandi is of course far removed from this particular conflict, yet this entire novel might be thought of as a means of coming to terms with her mixed heritage. Fascinating stories about the wars that have transformed Ethiopia and the people that lived through them. I read the Italian but I know and trust the work these translators. Definitely worth a read.

I was hooked at the beginning and then it got slow. I lost the book while I was traveling and didn't finish the last 2 chapters so I can't comment on the ending
